Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are credits that you can buy to ensure the energy you use comes from a renewable energy source. On average Americans use 1,000 Kilowatt hours (KwH) of electricity every month. To ensure that energy is generated by a renewable source and has no negative impact on the atmosphere all you have to do is purchase one REC. This is called an “offset” because you are negating the emission heavy, polluting production of standard electricity with clean production of renewable energy from solar panels or wind turbines.

1,000 KwH standard production (coal, natural gas, petroleum, nuclear) + 1,000 KwH renewable production (solar, wind, geothermal) = 2,000 KwH (1,000 KwH “dirty” + 1,000 KwH “clean)
