Renewable Energy Certificates
Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are credits you can buy to ensure the energy you use comes from a renewable energy source. On average Americans use 1,000 Kilowatt hours (KwH) of electricity every month. RECs ensure the equivalent of that energy is generated by a renewable source like solar panels or wind turbines. This neutralizes the negative impacts of standard electricity production from coal, natural gas or petroleum. RECs guarantee the electricity you use in your modern lifestyle is less disruptive to the balance of life than standard electricity production.
1,000 KwH standard production (coal, natural gas, petroleum, nuclear) + 1,000 KwH renewable production (solar, wind, geothermal) = 2,000 KwH (1,000 KwH “dirty” + 1,000 KwH “clean)
